What Does a Hair Transplant Surgery Involve?

A hair transplant involves moving hair follicles from one part of the body to a bald or balding site. While it is primarily used to treat male pattern baldness, these techniques are just as effective for female patients. It is a minimally invasive procedure, and there are several different techniques a doctor can suggest and utilize when approaching hair restoration with a patient. We make sure to allow our patients to choose what procedure and solution they are most comfortable with while also informing them of the benefits of each so our patients have the results most favorable for them.

Where Does the Hair Come From?
Explaining The Donor Area

The donor area in terms of hair transplantation refers to hair follicles outside of your balding area- typically on the sides and back of your head- that are genetically coded to last a lifetime. In male patients, in particular, there is usually an over-abundance of hair in these areas.

The abundance of hair allows for successful hair relocation and transplantation to thinning and/or balding areas. Because the donor’s hair is your own, it will grow naturally and continue to flourish throughout your lifetime.

Hair Transplant Techniques

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is a hair restoration technique in which the hair is transplanted naturally in groups of one to four hairs, also known as follicular units. Each follicular unit contains sebaceous glands, nerves, a small muscle and occasional fine vellus hairs (the vaguely noticeable thin hair that covers a persons body).
During the transplantation process, hair is removed from the back of the scalp in a single strip. The FUT harvesting method allows the units to be separated under a microscope, which reduces the likelihood of graft transection and increases the rate of graft survival upon transplantation. Dr. Carlos Puig makes the decision as to how many hair follicular units are needed to design the most natural looking results for each individual patient. He has performed more than 20,000 procedures in his impressive career and continues to offer those in Houston and the surrounding area’s stellar surgical hair restoration that leave patients with optimal confidence.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

The Difference Between FUE and FUT

In the follicular unit extraction procedure (FUE), the graft is removed directly from the scalp with a punch and leaves no linear scar. This is a great option for patients who do not want any visible scarring as a result of the procedure and want natural results from each follicle being transplanted one at a time.

In the FUE hair transplantation, each follicle unit is individually taken without having to remove a strip of tissue in the process. The follicles are removed in a more random fashion than that of the FUT, but that does not mean that either is quicker than the other. However, it results in a scar that is barely noticeable to the human eye unlike that of the FUT procedure.

Scalp Reduction

When using the scalp reduction procedure to treat hair loss, parts of the scalp are surgically removed to reduce the overall area of bald skin. The parts of the scalp that exhibit the best health are then stretched and repositioned, making the balding area smaller and more manageable.

This traditional technique of removing crown balding is currently only used as an adjunct in injury reconstruction and updating old hair transplant technology. Dr. Puig and the PHRC team have extensive experience with this procedure and can also utilize it on donor-challenged patients.

Single Hair Graft Transplantation

Hair follicles naturally produce multiple hairs, but in the leading edge of the transplanted area single hair grafts are essential in creating a soft frontal hairline with a natural transition from light to dense hair. This process is used in order to ensure a natural looking frontal hairline, as to not create an appearance of front-heavy hair.

While single hair grafts require a great deal of skill and tedious technique, they are essential to PHRC, as they are what helps our work rival the artistry of Mother Nature. These single hair grafts can also be transplanted to restore the natural look in the central crown, eyebrows, eyelashes, facial hair and temporal points giving the face a more youthful appearance.
